With the rapid spread of tools such as ChatGPT, generative artificial intelligence (AI) has long since arrived in everyday university life. It has a major influence on studies and teaching education. With the "AI in teaching, learning and examining" project, The Hochschule Niederrhein (HSNR) is now launching a university-wide initiative for the responsible and sensible use of generative artificial intelligence in studies and teaching education. The aim is to strengthen lecturers and students in the reflective and competent use of AI and to jointly develop new ways of using AI in courses and examination formats.
Initiated by Prof Dr Gudrun Stockmanns, Vice President for Studies and Teaching Education at The Hochschule Niederrhein, the project will run for two years and is being implemented by Dr Elske Schönhals, Lara Dagli-Yalcinkaya and Lea-Sophie Natter. In addition to the development of guidelines and handouts for the integration of AI in teaching education and examinations, the focus is also on practical formats such as workshops, exchange formats and digital self-study programmes.
At the start of the project, the focus is on dialogue: a university-wide survey will be conducted to determine the perspectives, experiences and needs of lecturers. At the same time, students will be involved in the annual Campus Week, among other things, in order to jointly develop AI examination formats of the future.
The project is based on The Hochschule Niederrhein's mission statement for teaching and learning (2022) and sees itself as a future-oriented, dynamic and participatory process. It accompanies the transformation of university lecturers through AI not only with concrete offers, but also with a research-based perspective on the digital transformation.
