The Tuntenshow
At a Tunten show, Tunten perform on stage with no restrictions on what an act can be. For example, eating a yoghurt or singing a song, from great to sleazy, from tame to sexual. You can find or perform anything at a Tuntenshow. But don't worry, we use content notes.
The main aims are political statements, social criticism, the celebration of diversity, fun, empowerment through self-expression, criticism of perfectionism and testing the boundaries of good taste.
The word "Tunte"
On the one hand, it is a homophobic slur against men who wear women's clothing or behave in a particularly affected or feminine way. However, the word "Tunte" has also been reclaimed by activists and is used as a self-designation and fighting term. There is no English translation. There are no clear rules as to what a Tunte should look like. "Tuntigkeit" is seen as something that fundamentally dissolves gender boundaries and is not limited to cis men.
Tuntische virtues
Schangelig describes the courage to fail and to cross boundaries. Other virtues include tolerance for imperfection, shabbiness, nastiness, shamelessness, annoyance, cost efficiency, elegance, silliness and presence.
