"I hope there will soon be different conditions in the institutions!" -
Young people labelled as homosexuals in the National Socialist compulsory education system
In 1929, the homosexual teenager O. S. described his experiences of violence in the Struveshof state educational centre in an anarchist magazine. He was in the home because of his sexuality and spoke of beating educators and sexualised violence. At the end of his report, he expresses hope for improvement in the future. However, when the National Socialists came to power, the persecution of sexual diversity was systematically expanded - including within the social services. The lecture sheds light on an aspect of this persecution that has received little attention to date: so-called welfare education. Young people who were marked as homosexual in the files were torn from their social environment in order to institutionalise and indoctrinate them in institutions. Which institutions labelled the young people as homosexual and how? What kind of everyday life and repression did they experience in the homes? And in what form was there resistance to the forced education?
Jako Wende (no pronouns) is researching the history of sexual and gender diversity under National Socialism and will explore these questions in his lecture, focussing on the Struveshof State Educational Home.
